Our History
A journey since 1993
Velammal Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School opened its doors in 1993 with a modest cohort of students and a firm belief: that quality education, delivered with warmth and discipline, could transform a community. What began as a single-building institution at Lakshmi Nagar has grown, decade by decade, into a full-fledged higher secondary campus serving thousands of families across Maduravoyal and greater Chennai.
Through the 1990s we focused on building strong foundations — recruiting committed teachers, investing in libraries and laboratories, and shaping a culture where every child was known by name. The 2000s brought expansion: new blocks, dedicated science and computer labs, sports infrastructure and the introduction of higher secondary streams in science, commerce and humanities.
Today, more than thirty years on, Velammal Memorial continues to evolve. Smart classrooms, structured co-curricular programmes and a robust mentoring system sit alongside the values that have always defined us: integrity, discipline and respect. Our alumni are doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists and public servants — but above all, they are thoughtful citizens, and that remains our proudest measure of success.

Message from the Principal
Dear parents and students, welcome to Velammal Memorial. Leading this institution is both a privilege and a responsibility I take very personally. Every morning as our students walk through the gates, I am reminded that our task is not simply to teach subjects, but to shape human beings — curious, kind and capable.
We invest heavily in our teachers, because a great school is, above all, a community of great educators. We believe in academic rigour, but never at the cost of a child's wellbeing. Our classrooms are places where questions are welcomed, mistakes are learning opportunities, and every voice is heard.

When Velammal Memorial was founded in 1993, our vision was clear: to build an institution where academic excellence and character education stood shoulder to shoulder. More than thirty years later, that vision continues to guide every decision we make — from the curriculum we design to the teachers we hire and the facilities we build.
I strongly believe that a school must reflect the community it serves. That is why we remain rooted in Maduravoyal, invested in local families, and committed to keeping quality education accessible. We continue to modernise — with smart classrooms, updated laboratories and a stronger digital backbone — but our foundational values are unchanged.
On behalf of our management, I thank every parent, teacher, student and alumnus who has walked this journey with us. The next chapter, I promise, will be just as thoughtful and even more ambitious.
